Can they kick you out of school for cheating? What can happen when your teacher catches you cheating? These and more questions about the consequences of cheating rob sleep from those who would like to cheat but are afraid to do so. So let’s be clear about what can happen if you get caught cheating.
Every country has its own customs
What are the consequences of cheating in other countries? We are lucky in this regard. Cheating at school is not allowed in Eastern Europe, but whoever succeeds wins the respect of the classmates. Teachers have different approaches to this – some pretend not to see, others take the cheat sheet, give a fail and arrange for a re-take date with the student. Still others enter negative demerit notes and negative points.
Which country has the most restrictive cheating laws? Japan and South Korea, i.e. Asian countries. In Japan, the cult of a good student and hard worker is deeply entrenched. A person caught cheating must even take into account the loss of the student’s status, which means expulsion from school. In South Korea, the approach to cheating is similar, although there is not as much pressure for top grades and studying from dawn till dusk.
In the US, on the other hand, there is an unwritten consent to expose the person who cheats on the tests. Similar rules apply in Great Britain and Germany.
You live in Poland? You can breathe a sigh of relief. Unless you take your high school diploma exam (matriculation exam) or the eighth grade exam and get caught. In that case, you’d better fasten your seat belts, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Consequences of cheating on the high school diploma exam (matriculation exam)
While a test or a pop-quiz should be fine, because the teacher often simply confiscates the cheat sheet and lowers the grade, being caught cheating in one of the exams or the matriculation examination has serious consequences.
According to the Education System Act, any forms of external assistance are prohibited in the eighth-grade exam and matriculation exam. This means that not only are cheat sheets not allowed, but also phones, tablets and more. You can only carry a calculator and a pen.
You were caught cheating on the high-school exam, what’s next? The commission stops your exam. You are asked to leave the examination hall. Then the school principal sends you a written decision voiding you matriculation exam with justification. In response, you can submit an appeal to the District Education Commission. The situation will be reconsidered and a decision on how to proceed will be formulated on that basis.
A consequence of voiding the matriculation exam is lack of possibility to participate in the official re-take in August, so you would have to wait a year before you can take that exam again. It is severe, because you won’t be able to apply for universities
Cheating in university/college
Does cheating in college pose serious consequences? It depends on the university and the lecturer. Some institutions in Poland suspend cheating students, others have a less restrictive approach to the subject. However, you should take into account that cheating will always be seen as dishonest by teachers and instructors.
In the best-case scenario, you will schedule a re-take in the class you got caught in. It would probably be an oral re-take, or you will be extra-guarded, if it has to be done in written form. Lesson for the future? Cheat cleverly! Use everyday objects for it, i.e. pens.
During the matriculation examination, there is a rule that forbids commission members from walking around the exam hall once the exam starts. So you can have a few extra pens, and it won’t seem suspicious to anyone.
Can you be subjected to conditional pass for cheating in the exam? No, unless you don’t pass the re-take. Conditional pass is an extreme, and neither instructors nor teachers like using it. Chin up, even if you get caught, it can be undone! You won’t get expelled from school for cheating in Poland.
